Facts about Education in the US |
US education has made a long, sometimes rocky but generally steady progression in the realm of educating its children. This year some 50+ million elementary and secondary students will be in the classroom. Another 22 million or so will be attending colleges and universities. It may be a good time to reflect a bit on this important slice of life.
- The first public high school was started in Boston in 1821.
- At the turn of the 20th century, Americans began to realize that universal public education was a necessary social investment.
- 86 percent of K-12 students are in public schools.
- Females make up the majority of college students with 12.5 million attending in the fall of 2013 compared with 9.3 million males.
- According to the US Census Bureau those degrees pay off. In 2011, those with bachelor degrees or better earned an average of $81,761. Those with GEDs or high school diplomas received an average of $40,634. Average wages for those who didn't make it past ninth grade was $26,545.
- According to the latest PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) math and science scores, the US scored higher than Greece, Israel, Chile Mexico and Turkey and lower than Finland, Korea, Japan, Canada and Australia. We were about the same as Poland, Austria, the UK, Hungary and Sweden.
